The Sustainability Office at UNC-Chapel Hill works with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community members to catalyze the development and implementation of sustainable policies, practices, curricula, and behaviors.  Interns will become familiar with the many sustainability practices, policies, and curricula at UNC while receiving hands-on experience developing communication tools, supporting initiatives, and assessing sustainable practices at UNC.  All internships are competitive and require an in-person interview.

The Sustainability Office is now accepting applications for summer internships. To apply for an internship, the applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student at Carolina in good academic standing. Recent graduates are also eligible.

Wage: $10/hr
Schedule: Flexible during normal weekday business hours, may require evening/weekend hours for special events. Hours must be completed at the UNC Sustainability Office.
Location: Giles Horney Building (103 Airport Drive)
Term: Hiring 40 hr/week through the summer, May 11- August 21. Possibility of extension through Fall 2015 semester for 10 hr/week position.

Internship 1: Sustainability Strategic Planning  

Assist the Sustainability Office and external consultants in developing a comprehensive Sustainability Strategic Plan for the University. The plan will include goals, priorities, and action items related to teaching, research, operations, and engagement. Responsibilities and projects will include:

  • Obtain data related to university sustainability initiatives, programs, and operations.
  • Identify and document best practices at peer universities and model campuses. Learn protocol for collecting information.
  • Learn about innovative and effective facilitation and engagement strategies.
  • Interact with university staff and administrators.
  • Contribute to compiling, drafting, and editing the Sustainability Strategic Plan.
  • Develop compelling tools for sharing the outputs of the plan with the campus community.
  • Perform other tasks as required, including participating in Fall Fest (August 16) and Sustainability Social (August 20) during Week of Welcome.

Required Skill Sets: Extremely organized; self-motivated; perseverant; analytical; good communicator and team player; must be able to work independently; familiar with Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Desired: Graduate student; passionate about advancing sustainability across multiple disciplines and work units; familiarity with outreach strategies and tools; previous participation in sustainability-related academics or student organizations.

Internship 2: Website Content and Multimedia Projects Internship

Contribute original content and update information on the Sustainability Office and Carolina Green websites. Develop new interactive web-based resources. Responsibilities and projects will include:

  • Update content on website to include information on current campus sustainability initiatives.
  • Add new content and propose ideas about new, interactive modules.
  • Review and update case studies of campus sustainability-related programs and practices.
  • Identify ways to promote website to campus.
  • Contribute to strategy to increase website traffic and search engine optimization.
  • Assist with other Sustainability Office projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as required, including participating in Fall Fest (August 16) and Sustainability Social (August 20) during Week of Welcome.

Required Skill Sets: organized; good writing skills; proficient in HTML; responsible; must be able to work independently; ability to use Adobe Creative Suite Photoshop and Illustrator, or willingness to learn; interest in sustainability. Desired: passionate about advancing sustainability across multiple disciplines; previous participation in sustainability-related academics or student organizations is highly desirable.

Internship 3: Peer-to-Peer Education Internship

Help other students “go green” at Carolina through outreach and leadership in peer-to-peer sustainability education. Support and grow EcoReps program. This position will be extended throughout the school year (reduced to 5 hours/week in the Fall and Spring semester) and preference will be given to a candidate interested in retaining the position and serving in a leadership role for the EcoReps student group. Responsibilities and projects will include:

  • Serve as the representative of the UNC Sustainability Office at student orientation and select campus and community events. This will include setup of informational exhibits, facilitation of activity tables, and creation/delivery of orientation presentations.
  • Work with the Sustainability Office to lead and direct the UNC EcoReps student program, including developing events, materials, and resources; recruiting new student members; and updating training materials.
  • Engage and facilitate development of EcoReps student group.
  • Identify, recruit, and train new group of EcoReps.
  • Engage existing EcoReps by adding new activities to inform and engage members.
  • Must be available for first-year and transfer orientation tabling, schedule TBD.
  • Must be available for Fall Fest (August 16), EcoReps Info Fair (August 18), and Sustainability Social (August 20) during Week of Welcome and first EcoReps training event within first 2 weeks of the fall semester.

Required Skill Sets: outgoing personality; excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to establish rapport with and adapt messaging to diverse audiences; good writing skills; interest in sustainability. Desired:  passionate about advancing sustainability across multiple disciplines; previous participation in sustainability-related academics or student organizations is highly desirable.

Internship 4: Communications and Design Internship

Develop and update outreach materials, coordinate events, and regularly update sustainability listserv with news, events, and job postings. Responsibilities and projects will include:

  • Develop attractive and compelling multimedia outreach materials, including activities and displays for exhibits and outreach events, and virtual campus tours.
  • Maintain and develop online and multimedia content.
  • Review and update existing outreach and events materials.
  • Suggest topics and draft items for listserv updates.
  • Research and post events on Google calendar and listserv.
  • Identify ways to promote Sustainability listserv subscriptions.
  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and marketing campus-wide sustainability events.
  • Assist with other Sustainability Office projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as required, including participating in Fall Fest (August 16) and Sustainability Social (August 20) during Week of Welcome.

Required Skill Sets: organized; self-motivated; creative; detail oriented; good writer, communicator and team player; ability to use Adobe Creative Suite Photoshop and Illustrator, or willingness to learn; interest in campus sustainability. Desired: passionate about advancing sustainability across multiple disciplines; previous participation in sustainability-related academics or student organizations is highly desirable.
